The Journal of the Brazilian Musculoskeletal Pain Society (JBMPS) was born in 2025. It is the official publication of the Brazilian Musculoskeletal Pain Association (ABDOR) – Pain Committee of the SBOT – Brazilian Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology.
It is an open-access journal with no publication fee. Published continuously, it is designed for all health professionals engaged in pain-related research. The review process follows a double-blind, peer-reviewed system.
We have adopted the Creative Commo ns CC BY license, which allows the distribution, remixing, adaptation, and creation of your work, even for commercial purposes, if due credit is given for the original creation.
The journal accepts articles only in English, in the following categories: Original Articles; Update Articles and Editorials (by invitation of the editor-in-chief); Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Articles, and Technical Notes.
A certificate issued by a professional translator (proofreading or translating) must be included in the submission process. JBMPS provides contact details for professionals in the Language and Editing Services section at the end of the instructions to authors.
Open Science Compliance
JBMPS follows the Green Open Access model.
The Open Science movement promotes collaborative, transparent, and publicly accessible scientific practices.
JBMPS ensures a rigorous peer-review process and aligns with Open Science principles. Our editorial policy reflects this commitment by emphasizing transparency and open access to knowledge. We support practices such as publishing preprints and providing open access to all articles, ensuring that advancements and innovations in musculoskeletal pain field are accessible to researchers, clinicians, and the public without restrictions.
To maintain integrity and transparency, JBMPS implements various measures, including a code of good practices for authors, reviewers, and editors, along with an open access policy. It also requires accurate attribution of author roles in multi-authored papers and encourages the sharing of datasets and supplementary materials through open online repositories.
When submitting manuscripts, authors are asked to complete the Open Science Compliance Form, which requests manuscript information in alignment with Open Science communication standards.
Ethics in Publication
JBMPS maintains a steadfast commitment to upholding good practices and ethics in scientific publishing. All submitted papers are expected to adhere to high ethical standards, encompassing accuracy in data, transparency in authorship, and full disclosure of potential conflicts of interest. The integrity of research is fundamental to us, and any form of misconduct, such as plagiarism, will be treated seriously by the journal’s editorial board.
Adherence to COPE Guidelines: JBMPS adheres to the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines, ensuring that we maintain international standards in addressing ethical issues in publishing. This includes, but is not limited to, guidelines on authorship, conflicts of interest, privacy, consent, and standards for dealing with potential instances of publishing misconduct.
Focus and Scope
JBMPS is committed to sharing original and innovative research in the musculoskeletal pain field. Our goal is to publish articles that significantly contribute to the advancement of knowledge and practice in musculoskeletal pain and its related areas. EDITORIAL POLICY
Preprints
JBMPS recognizes the importance of emerging scientific platforms and offers readers and researchers faster access to recent research findings prior to formal publication. As such, JBMPS welcomes manuscripts that have been deposited in noncommercial preprint servers.
Authors are encouraged to complete the Open Science Compliance Form and submit it as a Supplementary File along with their manuscript.
A preprint refers to a preliminary version of a scientific work shared publicly in online repositories before it undergoes peer review and eventual journal publication. This practice accelerates the dissemination of scientific knowledge, allowing researchers to promptly communicate their findings to the academic community. Preprints are available in public repositories such as bioRxiv and medRxiv, which are dedicated to biology and medicine, respectively. These repositories, supported by nonprofit organizations, offer free public access for reading and downloading.
Authors should provide information about the preprint, including its title, authors, the name of the repository where it was published, the publication date, and the DOI. They must also clarify the relationship between the preprint and the manuscript submitted to the journal, such as whether the preprint is an earlier draft or includes supplementary information. Additionally, authors are required to disclose any conflicts of interest related to the preprint, including funding from organizations or companies with a vested interest in the research.
Peer review process
This journal follows a double-blind review process, ensuring that the author remains anonymous to the reviewers during the entire peer review. It is the author’s responsibility to anonymize the manuscript and any related materials.
Author names, affiliations, and any potentially identifying details must be removed from the manuscript text and all supplementary files, such as figures or additional material. A separate Title Page should be submitted, including the title, author names, affiliations, and the contact details of the corresponding author. Any acknowledgements, disclosures, or funding information should also be included on this page. Authors should refrain from citing their own work in a manner that could reveal their identity.
This journal also publishes special or guest-edited issues. The peer review process for articles in these issues is the same as for the general journal. Furthermore, if a guest editor authors an article in their issue, they will not be involved in the peer review process for that article.
Transparency and Openness in Peer Review Policy
Voluntarily, authors and reviewers may choose to reveal their identities, which will be published in the article. The reviewers’ opinions may be published along with the article, and reviewers may choose not to disclose their identities. Preprint peer review process.
Preprint Peer Review Process
While JBMPS follows a double-anonymized peer review process for journal submissions, this cannot be applied to preprints due to the known identities of authors and reviewers. Instead, JBMPS uses a modified peer review for preprints, where reviewers know the authors’ identities, but authors do not know the reviewers. This ensures a thorough and unbiased evaluation of preprints
before potential publication.
JBMPS may request additional details from preprint authors regarding research methodology, results, and conclusions to assist reviewers in assessing the work’s quality. Additionally, JBMPS may ask authors to provide information on any prior peer review the preprint has undergone in other repositories to support a more comprehensive evaluation.
Open Data
To align with these principles, JBMPS requests that all datasets associated with submitted manuscripts be accompanied by the Open Science Compliance Form. This form must be completed in detail by the authors, highlighting how the research adheres to Open Science standards, and submitted as a Supplemental File with the manuscript.
This practice ensures that all relevant data is available for review and analysis, contributing to the integrity and reproducibility of scientific research. Adherence to these guidelines reinforces
JBMPS’s commitment to transparency and excellence in scientific publishing.
Clinical Trial Data: For manuscripts reporting clinical trial data, JBMPS adopts the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) on the sharing of such data.
- Data availability statements should be clear and detailed, including the following information:
- Data Availability with Controlled Access:
• The statement should explain the reasons for controlled access, such as privacy issues or ethical and legal considerations.
• Access conditions must be accurately described, including contact information for access requests and deadlines for response.
• Any restrictions on data usage, such as data use agreements, must be clearly indicated. A copy or link to the data use agreement must be available if requested by the editors.
• Restrictions on data reuse or authorship requirements must be explicitly described in the manuscript and communicated to the editors at the time of submission.
• Editors retain the right to refuse manuscript consideration if data access restrictions are excessively restrictive. - Third Party Data:
• Where data obtained from third parties cannot be shared, specific restrictions should be clearly stated in the data availability statement.
• Authors must make data available for peer review, if requested, respecting the terms of any data use agreement and in compliance with ethical and legal requirements.
• Citation Standards: All data, program codes, and methods must be appropriately cited using DOIs, journal citations or other persistent identifiers. Exceptional situations that require different treatment, such as confidential information under non-disclosure agreements, must be communicated to the editor up to the manuscript review stage and clearly mentioned in the Acknowledgements (see Citations and References).
• Data Standards: All data used must be accessible to any researcher for the purpose of reproducing or expanding the analysis. Data should either be included in the article
or deposited in specialized community repositories or general-purpose repositories. Some examples include Dryad, Figshare, Zenodo, Mendeley Data, OSF, and the SciELO Data
repository. Special situations, such as privacy protection or the acquisition of data from third parties, should be discussed with the editor as early as possible and clearly indicated in the
Acknowledgments.
• Transparency in Analytical Methods (Code): The Methods section should provide sufficient detail to allow study replication. Materials or samples used in the analysis must
be available to any researcher for direct replication. Any restrictions on material availability, as well as Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs), must be disclosed to the editor until the manuscript review stage and specified in the Acknowledgments.
Publication Fees
JBMPS does not charge fees for submitting, reviewing, publishing, distributing or downloading articles, ensuring that publication remains entirely free and with open access.
Ethics and Misconduct, Erratum, and Retraction Policy
JBMPS strictly adheres to ethical publication guidelines and actively combats scientific misconduct. Any cases of plagiarism, data falsification, duplicate publications, undisclosed conflicts of interest, or other forms of scientific misconduct, once identified, will be addressed seriously by the Editorial Board. The journal reserves the right to take appropriate actions, which may include rejection of the manuscript, prohibition of future submissions from the authors involved, and communication of infractions to affiliated institutions.
• Erratum: JBMPS recognizes the importance of rectifying any errors that may arise following the publication of an article. If a significant error is identified, authors must inform the journal immediately. An erratum will be published as soon as possible to detail the corrections and ensure the accuracy and completeness of the scientific record.
• Plagiarism and Self-Plagiarism (Text Recycling): JBMPS strictly prohibits plagiarism and self-plagiarism. Selfplagiarism refers to the reuse of significant parts of an author’s own previously published work without proper citation. Manuscripts found to engage in text recycling will be rejected, and authors may face sanctions from the Editorial Board.
• IA: Authors should disclose the use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process by adding a statement at the end of the main manuscript file before the References section. The statement should be placed in a new section entitled “Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies in the Writing Process.”
Statement: During the preparation of this work, the author(s) used [NAME OF the TOOL/SERVICE] for the purpose of [REASON]. After using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as needed and take(s) full responsibility for the content of the publication.
This statement does not apply to the use of basic tools for grammar and spelling checking, as well as reference management, among other practices. If there is nothing to reveal, there is no need to add a statement.
These policies are critical to maintaining the high ethical standards of scientific publishing and ensuring confidence in the integrity of the content published by JBMPS.
Conflicts of Interest Policy
Conflict of Interest Statement All authors (including corresponding and co-authors associated with the manuscript) must make a formal statement at the time of submission indicating any potential conflict of interest that might constitute an embarrassment to any of the authors if it were not to be declared and were to emerge after publication. Such conflicts might include, but are not limited to, shareholding in or receipt of a grant or consultancy fee from a company whose product features in the submitted manuscript or which manufactures a competing product. Should the article be accepted for publication, this information will be published with the paper. Please click http://www.icmje.org/conflictsof-interest to download a Conflict of Interest form. The disclosure information is important in article processing. If the provided forms are incomplete or missing, it can cause delays in publishing of article
Use of Similarity Verification Software
JBMPS prioritizes academic integrity and ensures originality by implementing a strict similarity verification policy. All submitted manuscripts are analyzed for text overlaps with published content prior to peer review. Manuscripts found to contain significant plagiarism are rejected, and authors are held accountable for adhering to ethical citation practices. Sanctions for detected plagiarism may include submission bans and other measures determined by the Editorial Board.
Gender Equity in JBMPS Publications
JBMPS is committed to promoting gender equity in its publishing practices. We recognize the importance of fostering diversity and inclusivity in scientific research and actively encourage submissions from authors of all genders. For further information on inclusive writing practices and the SAGER guidelines, see chapter 11 of the AMA Manual of Style,11th ed.
